November 2014 When Otto moved into his son’s home who knew he would become a beloved friend. His funny shenanigans had our entire family laughing. For example, a Dove flew into Otto’s life very innocently but decided to stay for several months. The dove made a cozy place to live on Otto’s lamppost. This drove Otto crazy. He would holler at this bird, chase the Dove, squirt him with the hose and the Dove never left his side. We have pictures of Otto sleeping and the Dove sitting patiently waiting for him to wake up. As neighbors would leave the development, the Dove would sit in the middle of the road which enabled the cars to pass. Neighbors would get out of their cars to knock at Otto’s home to let him know his Dove was in the street. Otto would say, “its nota my bird.” Otto was the neighborhood watchman. If there was trouble Otto would let you know and tell you how to deal with it. For example, when a dog escaped from our backyard, Otto knew how and which direction the dog ran off. This information was so helpful to the owners they made him pumpkin bread for all his help. He sure did love the cannoli’s we would drop off. The most remarkable quality in Otto was his love for our son Devon. He told us many times, “Your boy is a gooda boy” and would give him a dollar for all the hard work our son would do. The relationship grew over the years and developed into a friendship. Otto taught him several techniques with tools as Devon would build decorations for the holidays or his wood fort in the backyard. When Devon decided to build a garden, Otto was there to lend a helping hand. When Otto would try and shovel his walkway Devon would get dressed and go over to tell him to go inside while Devon completed the job. One night our son went over at 10:30 at night just so Otto would not do it in the morning. Devon would sit and listen as Otto talked about his life and coming to America. Devon knew all about his son who served in the Vietnam War and his loving wife. Otto will surely be missed by the neighbors of “Neshaminy Point” but most of all by a young boy named Devon who took the time to listen. The Hindman Family
